First Time Traveler Tips

It’s a scary feeling to plan, pack and travel to your first destination that is miles and miles away from home. Here are some tips for you to consider for your first adventure!

Have a super duper flexible plan. Make a list of what you want to accomplish when you’re on your trip. Then, prioritize the list. Plans ALWAYS change on trips, so make sure you make it to the priorities on your list first.

Travel with someone. Traveling with someone you know is safer, especially for your first trip. Quite honestly, it’s a lot more fun to share your travel experiences with someone. For the other poor college students out there, it is a lot cheaper to split the costs of lodging by two!

How do I put my entire life into a carry-on? Okay, this might be a little dramatic. But if you’re like me, you hardcore struggle with packing. I want to bring everything. I’ve come to learn that bringing pajamas, an outfit for everyday plus an extra outfit is the best bet. There is absolutely no need to bring 17 outfits on a five day trip to Mexico (sorry). For more packing tips, check out The Ultimate Carry-On Packing Guide.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles. No matter how you are traveling, make sure you bring stuff to do (books, music, knitting, or whatever else you do with your free time). It will help pass the time. I like to journal about what I have done so far on my trip while waiting. If you’ve never been on a plane, check out First Time Flying for what to expect.

Take pictures, lots of pictures. Take pictures to show your friends, but also for your own sake. I share some on my Instagram, but also keep some just for myself. Years will pass, and you may need a bit of a refresher on the places and faces you’ve seen.
